Week 15: Capstone

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.     For my "final" week, I did not do much in regards to Greenwood. As I talked about in my first blogpost, my semester has been filled with different research projects and obligations. However, as a student, nothing this semester was as important than Capstoning and my Thesis Proposal Defense. I am lucking that both Sarah and Dr. Lyons, who is my supervisor at the Florida France Soldiers Stories Project, respected my wish to solely focus on finishing my thesis proposal as well as studying for my exams.      Since I am...

Week 13: Transcripts and Showcases

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.     This week was a return to normalcy after my long-winded fight with Adobe Acrobat. I returned to working on transcripts, which I have already written quite extensively about in the beginning weeks of this semester as well as my previous blog during my internship with RICHES in 2023.On top of working on the transcripts, however, I also began working on my PowerPoint presentation for the work that I have done in the internship and with Sarah.     I reached out to Sarah regarding some interesting topics that I can bring up,...

Week 12: Overcoming Adobe

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.     In my last post, I had outlined my problems with Adobe Acrobat and how it has stunted my progress on creating my A/V log. This week, I am happy to report that I got past that barrier and was able to successfully create and submit the A/V Log! However, I still have my issues with Acrobat, which I will expand upon more.     I mentioned before that through the university, students have access to a lot of helpful programs, such as Adobe Acrobat, which I use for more than just this internship at Greenwood. However, I w...

Week 11: Abode Acrobatics

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.     This week tested my patience the most out of any week thus far. In previous weeks, I had been less productive from things that were somewhat out of my control, but I could still find ways around. For example, when I was dealing with health issues, there was still moments where I could get up and do a little bit of transcription work before I fell back asleep or laid back down. Still being a bit productive even in a bad situation.     This week was different. As a UCF student, I get access to a lot of programs and softwa...

Week 10: A/V Log

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.   This week, I needed to pivot away from the transcription I had been working on. After working on it for a few weeks, granted with many breaks in between, it is hard to keep going back to just doing the same task. Instead, I decided that I wanted to work on the A/V Log for the oral history instead.    From my experience before in RICHES, the A/V Log and Transcription were in the same document. The Greenwood cemetery template also has a similar design to RICHES template where there is space for topics and timestamps to go, but t...

Week 8/9: Post-Milton and Presentation

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.     Here I am two weeks after I said I will not be late against on one of the internship posts. This time, it is not my fault! As I mentioned in my last post, Florida was hit by Hurricane Milton. For some parts of the state, especially the area I grew up in in Tampa Bay, there was pretty devastating damage. However, I am relieved that my family and UCF/Orlando was spared from a lot of long-lasting damages.     My last post I also mentioned that I would be heading to South Carolina, which I did end up doing. The traffi...

Week 7: Presentation and Hurricane Milton

Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.     This is (hopefully) the last week that I will be behind on one of these updates for the semester. I waited a little bit longer to have something to update on since my previous blogpost was so late into the week. I should be able to more steadily provide meaningful updates from here on out.     One of the major hurdles, however, is the impending hurricane that is supposed to hit Central Florida. As a UCF student, we have already been advised that school will be closed from Tuesday (10/8) to Thursday (10/10). Having...
