Week 6: Sickness
Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.
This is a long overdue update for my work in Greenwood. I have, again, had some unfortunate setbacks that have gotten in the way of me to finishing the transcript. I have been sick since Monday night on 9/23. I started with a fever and a migraine headache that turned into a bad ear infection where I lost almost all hearing in my right ear. This mixed with hurricane prep and the actual hurricane hitting has led to multiple set backs.
To vent a little bit about my health problems in lieu of an actual update, I am still having complications from a nasal surgery I had at the end of July. I had a complete nasal blockage and had to get some growths removed. Since that surgery, I have returned to the doctor every two weeks to vacuum my sinus cavities and monitor any more growths. Towards the end of September, I got a good report back saying that the growths were almost completely gone and there was very little "gunk" to vacuum in my cavities. Fast forward to my sickness, I returned to the doctor as I had a feeling the two were connected. Sure enough, the growths have returned more aggressive and caused an infection. The doctor cleared up as much as he could, but there is a possibility that my bone in my nose is infected and may need to be surgically removed. This is far off the topic of this internship, but I am quite anxious about everything going on.
To bring it back to the internship, I am shifting my work to making a PowerPoint. I will be helping Sarah introduce one of UCF's Digital History projects, VHP, to a few undergraduate Service-Learning students. For the most part, I will be going over how to create a transcript, a A/V log, and an abstract. This PowerPoint is exciting as it is something that I am hoping can be quickly made and be very helpful and tangible to the students who will be assisting in VHP the rest of the semester.
Since it is already Wednesday (10/2), I will hold off on too many details. The goal is to have the PowerPoint nearly done by the end of the week, so I will perhaps add more details about it as well as photos in my post this coming Friday (10/4).
