Fall 2024: Greenwood Cemetery

    Hello, my name is Hiram Davila. I am in my second year at UCF in the History Master's program, and I am extremely excited to share some information about my internship this semester. My current research interests regard the early modern Spanish Empire, particularly the Spanish Inquisition. This blog will be acting as my journal week-by-week as I intern with the city of Orlando and Greenwood Cemetery throughout the Fall 2024 semester.   This week, I needed to pivot away from the transcription I had been working on. After working on it for a few weeks, granted with many breaks in between, it is hard to keep going back to just doing the same task. Instead, I decided that I wanted to work on the A/V Log for the oral history instead.    From my experience before in RICHES, the A/V Log and Transcription were in the same document. This time, it is not my fault! As I mentioned in my last post, Florida was hit by Hurricane Milton. For some parts of the state, especially the area I grew up in in Tampa Bay, there was pretty devastating damage. I waited a little bit longer to have something to update on since my previous blogpost was so late into the week. I should be able to more steadily provide meaningful updates from here on out.     One of the major hurdles, however, is the impending hurricane that is supposed to hit Central Florida. I have, again, had some unfortunate setbacks that have gotten in the way of me to finishing the transcript. I have been sick since Monday night on 9/23. I started with a fever and a migraine headache that turned into a bad ear infection where I lost almost all hearing in my right ear. This mixed with hurricane prep and the actual hurricane hitting has led to multiple set backs.      To vent a little bit about my health problems in lieu of an actual updat...

My goal was to finish the transcription this week, finish up with some of the minor details that needed to be fixed, such as adding indicators and time stamps when major topics are being brought forwards, and to begin the editing process. I was hoping that next week I would finish with the transcript completely, editing and all, and devote the rest of my time to finishing the metadata sheet on the transcript.     In my mind, the metadata should not take...

I am still running into the same difficulties that I talked about in my blog post last week and in my blog post from my time with RICHES back in 2023. To briefly add, however, the AI that has been assisting me through SharePoint has been getting progressively better as the interview has gone on. This has been the longest oral history I have transcribed, so the AI's assistance is much appreciated. What I have noticed is that when the interviewee sp...

A few of the problems I have ran into with the this transcript include using the correct pronunciations, such as when someone says "uh" in the middle of the sentence, making sure that proper nouns are spelled correctly and doing quick additional research outside of the oral history to make sure they are accurate when I can, as well as differentiating when to add verbs. For example, if X person is talking and Y person laughs, you are supposed to put Y: [laughs] and continue X's...
